Hi the Crypt Admin,

I'd like the program to check or validate the password
automatically before decryption. If the password is not
correct, don't proceed. I found it would corrupt the file if I
entered a wrong password for decryption and this is
disastrous.

Explorer integration

I've been looking for a light weight encryption util
for a while & Crypt seems to do it all. However I often
have to do things on the fly & operating from the
command line back-&-forth becomes a bit of an
inconvenience when en/decrypting repeatadly.

If you could integrate the program into the Windows
Explorer environment by adding options to the
right-click menu it would make the program that much
better, and easier to use. I know you're looking to be
an ultra-fast/light-weight program, but I believe this
can still be maintained by adding the explorer option.
No other program functionality, etc. need by modified
by adding the option, you're simply making the program
easier to call.

Adding an option simply stating 'Encrypt', 'Encrypt
As...', 'Decrypt', etc.. would still leave a minimal
footprint & perform the necessary functions. Also this
added functionality can be optional, allowing users to
choose to use the program in it's current state, or to
add the Explorer integration for those who use it on a
more frequent basis.

Anyways just an idea. Take it or leave it. Thank you
for making Crypt the excellent program that it is anyways.

Hi, I forgot one item: the encrypted file replaces the
plaintext file. What happens to the unencrypted data?
If you simply delete it will remain stored on the hard
disk and can be recovered with a disk editor.
This means that it would be important that the
plaintext data is securely delete, that is it should be
overwritten with something else, random data for example.

Hi,
crypt is a very useful idea, IMHO.
I like the concept of "in-place" encryption with the
filename staying the same.

There are a few details that I think could be improved.

1) It would be helpful if there was an
"ascii-armor"-option, like in PGP/GPG, meaning that the
encrypted file is coded base64. Then you can for
example send it as an email or include it in the text
of a webpage etc.

2) an automatic compression before encryption would be
really cool (GPG does that too)

3) this one is a bit annoying: 'crypt' will encrypt and
decrypt any file, without checking if it is already
encrypted. That can cause problems, for example if you
accidentally encrypt a file a second time. After that
you won't know if decryption fails because of wrong key
or because of accidental multiple encryption. This
leads to a high chance of data-loss.

4) similar subject: if you encrypt with, say key="xxx"
and then decrypt with key="yyy", 'crypt' will not
complain.
But of course you get garbage and you can easily get
mixed up with the keys and then terminally lose your
data. GPG explicitly differentiates between encryption
and decryption. Itwill decrypt only if you enter the
correct key AND if the file is encrypted. Plaintext
files will be left untouched.

There is no checking when encrypting or decrypting as
to whether the file is already encrypted or decrypted.
There is no checking when decrypting if the password
given is correct or not. Both of these could be done
by including a header of some kind.

As it overwrites the original files this is especially
problematic.

Prompt for password

Instead of requireing a password to be supplied as a
switch, would it be possible to allow the program to
prompt for a password at the console, i.e., not at the
command prompt per se, but when requested? What I'm
trying to do is automate the storing and encryption of
certain data using batch files. I don't want to put
the password in the batch file, so I just want to run
the batch file and be asked for the password. I hope
I'm clear enough.
