Here is yet another patch focusing on the edit package
with more modifs regarding unused variables, imports
cleanup, and unecessary casts. 31 files have been changed.

A few variables and imports cleanup while doing code
review. More to come.

The patch is an aggregation of all modifs. Please let
me know if the patch format is ok or not.
