OrangeHRM has been continuously receiving lots of support from its community members around the world. Students from PUCIT & SERC, Age De Gong from Netherlands with the Dutch language pack, Titus Permadi from Indonesia with various training material and our latest contributors are Alexander Blaine from Brazil who has developed a Brazilian – Portuguese language pack while Rashid from Azerbajan with developed the Azeri language pack.

We have decided to reward these contributors for the interest and commitment towards open source products and OrangeHRM. We will reward them with selected OrangeHRM add-ons for their contributions.

Web-Based Software is software you use over the internet with a web browser. You don’t have to install any CDs, download any software, or worry about upgrades. If you use an online bank or web-based email program like Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo Mail then you’ve already used web-based software before. Likewise today we find many web-based HR applications.
Web-Based software is attracting many organizations around the world. Some reasons for this are the costs incurred in buying expensive software then investing more money on costly hardware and then on top of that buy upgrades recruit IT Staff for maintenance.

The target set to be reached in the 1st quarter of next year was achieved much earlier with ease and just before the closure of a successful year for OrangeHRM even when the world was financially challenged. This achievement was greatly fueled by the revolutionized version 2.5 which was released in early October 2009.

Meeting Module from PUCIT

PUCIT Lahore is a set of Pakistani contributors. They have proposed a Meeting Module for OrangeHRM. Requirements spec and UI spec are already posted in OrangeHRM Community Contributions forum for community feedback.

This will initially be developed as a third party module (means you have to separately download it and integrate) but if more users demand it, we would think about adding it to core product. Please take some time to review the specs and give the feedback to make their attempt a success.

OrangeHRM 2.5 is Launched

New features in Version 2.5 include:

 New look and feel: With community collaboration we have created a new look and feel for version 2.5. We have taken into consideration key usability issues from the previous version. For an example in the PIM module you can display up to 100 users (up from 10 in the previous version). Software ergonomics, human factors science and design considerations were used to ensure usability and consistency throughout the application.
 Separation of the project time tracking and attendance: With the new release, administrators can track employees’ attendance (Punch In/Out) and create reports separately. Project time tracking can be done with the new grid view that allows users to enter time spent on project activities for the week.
 The Recruitment engine is better equipped with new features including the ability to attach resumes and expand or collapse the Job description.
 Over 150 issues were fixed and the system is much more stable than the previous version.
 Implementation of Advanced security measures: Cross-site scripting (XSS) security vulnerabilities that were discovered by our global community members have been fixed.
 The performance of the application has been increased by optimization of the database and re-factoring of the code base.

2.4.2 Is Out with Support to Shared Web Hosting

For the ease of users, when installing OrangeHRM, its installer creates the required MySQL database. For this OrangeHRM requires MySQL root details. But you don’t get MySQL root details from shared web hosts. So, if you wanted to install OrangeHRM in your shared web hosting account, you have to install it manually which can be a tedious task if you are not tech savvy.

We had got many requests regarding this issue and we addressed it in version 2.4.2. (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=156477&package_id=240543&release_id=678118)

Now you can use an already created empty MySQL database at OrangeHRM installer. If you have MySQL root access, you can still let OrangeHRM create the database for you. We have provided a method to switch between these two methods where OrangeHRM installer asks database details.

In addition to this, we have made some security enhancements in 2.4.2. We have also added automated upgraders for version 2.2.2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.4.0.1 and 2.4.1. Attendance Tracking is now available in OrangeHRM 2.5-alpha.

OrangeHRM 2.5-alpha.8 development release is now available. The punch in/out feature which was combined with timesheets, is now separately available as “Attendance Tracking” with a new attendance report.

Separating Project Time and Punch In/Out
In the current version of OrangeHRM, project time and punch in/out time entry mechanisms are integrated in a single timesheet. The punch in/out was introduced as an easier way to enter time for organizations that do not want detailed information of time spent on projects and activities.
However, based on user feedback, some organizations use both these type of time entry mechanisms. Punch In/Out is basically used to track attendance and project time is used to track detailed information on time spent on various projects and activities.
To improve the usability of this feature, we have decided to separate these 2 time tracking functionalities. Further, there will be configurable options to restrict employees’ rights to edit already reported Punch In/Out time data.
