Not sure is this is a bug or a feature.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But also without &lt;code&gt;groupplots&lt;/code&gt; to me it is not totally clear what the difference between &lt;code&gt;y tick style&lt;/code&gt; and &lt;code&gt;major y tick&lt;/code&gt; is. I would assume that the first sets options/key--values for major and minor ticks whereas the later does the same only for the major ticks, right? Do you think the documentation in the manual for the keys is totally clear or should it be adapted?&lt;/p&gt;
