If the DATE tag does not respect the standard GEDCOM format like 1 APR 1981, fallbacks to ISO8106 format, so 1981 04 01 or compact version 19810401. If this falls, tries ISO8106 like format where the month and day can be specified as one single character, so 1981 4 1. In this case the separator is required.
