Some questions I would like to explore are:

What do we expect Spellinator to do? Probably someone familiar with the Hypercard version will need to fill this out initially. Try to describe what the program does, not how the program will do it. Also try to explain why a feature is desirable. A described feature may not satisfy underlying needs as well as another feature.

What computing environments do we want to support? Native binaries? Web-based? Scripts? Others? Pros and cons?

Who are the primary users? (Teachers, students, parents, others?) What do we expect their goals and use patterns to be? What type of computing environments are they likely to have available? Do we accommodate them? Do they accomodate us? (eg, if we go web-based, do we include a lot of hacks to make it work in IE? Or can we demand that they download a standards compliant browser like Firefox, Opera, or Safari?)

What development environments are we considering? Pros and cons? List whatever you're comfortable working with. We'll sort it out later.

What other projects might be interesting to us? For inspiration. For interoperability.

Hypercard Version works under vMac emulator

I finally got the old mac hypercard version of the program to work under the vMac emulator. You will need to have Mini vMac on your linux pc. Then download the file http://reason2learn.ca/hfs30M.DSK.zip Uncompress it and start the vMac emulator with the file by dragging it onto your vMac. The program alias or shortcut is on the desktop. The program uses the arrow keys extensively to move up and down on the page (limits of old mac display) and also the windows key or ctrl (can't remember which) emulates the option key which is used heavily in the program to change items or select items to be changed. Hope this helps!

Sample Printout Screenshots Posted

I have uploaded some jpegs of the printed output of the original program. These can be found under the Wiki page under files. Hope this helps give a clearer picture of the activities.

Spelling List file available for download

A file containing the spelling word lists has been uploaded. These word lists are grouped by word families or patterns. They would be available to the teacher or parent as they are selecting words to use with students for a particular week or lesson.
