You nailed it: different versions of Java!

When I logged this issue in Feb. 2024, I had some other JVM installed on the target Windows 11 PC - probably an old Java 8.

But the evidence is gone now, because I later went on a tangent reverting to Java 7 JDK & JVM on this PC, attempting to build the Hodoku v2.2 source code (from 2012!), without luck thus far.

And Java 7 was definitely incompatible w/ SE (I tried :-)

Today I upgraded to Java 8 (1.8.0_401) on this PC, and I'm happy to report the issue no longer happens in SE 6.30.266 and 6.30.294.

This ticket can be closed now - call it "user error". :-)

Thanks!

Unrelated footnote: I had to tweak the v.266/v.294 gui.bat script, because the option "-Xmx2G" was causing a Java startup error:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for 2097152KB object heap

Reverting it to "-Xmx1G" got it working. Not sure if there is a better/simpler solution.

#4 Rejects valid puzzles - v 6.30.266

Chris,

I tested this puzzle in SE 6.30.294 at 2024-03-23 11:15 (GMT+10) and "not valid" is not repeatable there.

I'm sorry. I can't say that it's fixed, because I cannot repeat the problem to identify the root cause, but it does appear to be fixed in the latest release. Ergo, whatever I got wrong I now have right, apparently, by happy accident. I'll take it, but please repeat the test in the latest version. It is possible that the root cause is environmental. SE relies heavily on bitwise operations, and different JVM's (different versions of Java) produce radically different PCODE (high level instructions). God knows how much the exes (optimised executed instructions) differ.

Thank you for taking the time to report it. Try the latest version. Report it again if you can repeat it, including as much environmental information as you can. Sorry I can't be more help. And sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Cheers. Keith.

Rejects valid puzzles - v 6.30.266

Hi, there seems to be some regression in v 6.30.266: when I load certain valid puzzles (from .txt), it says "This Sudoku is not valid". These are known-valid 9x9 puzzles, which are accepted as valid by v 6.30.207 and by other apps (e.g. Hodoku & Sadman).

For example:
84.2.....6.1..9.....9..15...8....3..7..3.2..5..2....7...51..6.....5..8.3.....7.52

This is reported in v 6.30.266 as "not valid", with text:
"Some value(s) have no possible positions in some region(s). More specifically: The value 2 has no place in box 1"

This is incorrect - there is nothing wrong with this puzzle. It is accepted by v 6.30.207

Rejects valid puzzles - v 6.30.266

Ticket 4 has been modified: Rejects valid puzzles - v 6.30.266
Yep, when you rename a Swing control in Nutbeans it renames the control, and renames the call to the property, but doesn't rename the property in the properties file, so one should NEVER rename any bloody thing in Nutbeans.
