Tux Paint, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and translated into nearly 130 languages, has been a staple at schools and homes around the world for the past 18 years.

The latest version has promoted the "Fill" tool, previously found under the "Magic" section of Tux Paint, to the main toolbar, where it's easier to find. It also includes some performance improvements during start-up and when bringing up the "New" drawing dialog. The solid background colors can also be placed at the end of that dialog, allowing emphasis of template images.

Tux Paint also now makes it possible to disable stereo sound, which can benefit users with a hearing impairment, or in situations where only one speaker is available.

The new version of Tux Paint is available for download, free of charge, from the project's website at www.tuxpaint.org.

Version 0.9.24 is currently available for Apple macOS, Android, Microsoft Windows, RedHat Linux, and as source-code.
Supports Mac OS X 10.7 thru macOS 10.13, Windows XP thru 10, and Linux

The Tux Paint development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Tux Paint version 0.9.23, the latest release of their award-winning, free drawing program for children.

Initially released for the Linux operating system in 2002, and soon becoming available for Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS (previously Mac OS X), and other platforms, Tux Paint has become a staple at countless homes and schools around the globe.

New in this version are a "color picker", which allows any color within a drawing to be chosen using the pointer, and a set of three-, four-, and five-pointed star shapes.

The latest version also incorporates a number of new translations, bringing the number of supported languages up to nearly 130: Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Kabyle, Urdu, and Devanagari and Perso-Arabic variations of Kashmiri and Sindhi. Thirty other translations have been updated, as well.

The previous version, 0.9.22, was inoperable on OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) and later. This new release addresses compatibility problems, and should work with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), OS X 10.11 (El Capitan), macOS 10.12 (Sierra), and macOS 10.13 (High Sierra). Users running Mac OS X 10.6 or earlier should continue using Tux Paint 0.9.22.

Tux Paint is available for download free of charge from the project's website at www.tuxpaint.org.

New Breed Software is proud to announce the release of version 0.9.18 of Tux Paint, the Open Source drawing program for children. Tux Paint 0.9.18's color palette now includes a rainbow-colored button which brings up a color picker. The colors available for painting have expanded from less than twenty to over 50,000! And now, pictures can have any solid-colored background. The background colors -- along with the "Starter" template images that ship with Tux Paint (which previously appeared in the "Open" dialog) -- are available from a dialog that now appears when starting fresh via the "New" button.

"Magic" tools, the special effects in Tux Paint (such as blur, smudge and grass), have been removed from the core of Tux Paint and made into "plug-ins" which are loaded into Tux Paint when it is launched. A programming interface has been developed and documented, allowing anyone to easily write new "Magic" tools for Tux Paint. One goal of this new capability is to turn Tux Paint into a platform for teaching computer graphics programming to novice programmers, such as high school students.

Writing new "Magic" tools for Tux Paint is now so much easier, a dozen new ones have been added, including a calligraphy brush that changes thickness depending on how fast you stroke, fun tools for adding flowers, foamy bubbles, and water ripples to pictures, a kaleidoscopic paint brush for drawing symmetric artwork, and a drawing tool that colors additively (like beams of light), rather than subtractively (like paint).

The powerful Pango text rendering system is now used on systems that support it, providing vastly improved display of complex languages such as Arabic and Telugu. This version also introduces translations to Esperanto, Ojibway and Wolof languages. Following up the previous release's debut of "Input Method" support, the latest version adds support for entering text in Thai and Traditional Chinese.

Tux Paint 0.9.18 is available immediately for Microsoft Windows Vista, XP and 2000, PowerPC-based Apple Mac OS X systems, Fedora Linux, as is source-code. Versions for Intel Macs and older versions of Windows will follow in the coming weeks.

Announcing Tux Paint 0.9.17

Five years after the debut of its award-winning Open Source drawing program for children, New Breed Software is happy to announce the release of Tux Paint 0.9.17. This new version offers many exciting innovations alongside improvements to favorite features, including new stamps, new brushes for the Paint and Line tools, and support for a wider variety of screen resolutions and orientations - great for use with wide-screen LCD monitors and tablet PCs.

Tux Paint's well-loved Stamp tool is now cleaner, more flexible, and easier to use than ever. The addition of a smoothing filter minimizes pixelation when photographic stamps are scaled up, while newly added support for the Scalable Vector Graphics file format allows for byte-thrifty stamps that can scale up without any pixelation or blurring at all. Lastly, the constantly growing collection of stamps is now separated into categories (plants, animals, holidays, and so forth) for easier navigation.

Also, Tux Paint 0.9.17 proudly debuts the new Input Method feature, which allows users to input non-Latin characters with the Text tool. Currently, supported languages include Japanese (both Romanized Hiragana and Romanized Katakana) and Korean (the common Hangul 2-Bul method).

And as always, Tux Paint continues to learn new languages thanks to its global community of developers. Tux Paint 0.9.17 now supports more than 70 languages, with new translations into Latvian, Telugu, and Twi, in addition to updates in more than a dozen others.

Tux Paint 0.9.16 debuts exciting new features alongside a number of improvements to old favorites. A new simple-to-use Slideshow feature allows you to select your favorite works of art and play them back at various speeds. Slideshow will help teachers and students create classroom presentations, and can even be used to make simple flip-book style animations. Tux Paint's paintbrush tool premieres two new additions. A brand new animated brush feature cycles through a sequence of images, covering your canvas in a trail of footprints or skittering squirrels. Also, new directional brushes which change shape depending on which direction you draw, allow for more natural-looking strokes.

Version 0.9.16 also boasts a number of minor improvements over previous Tux Paint releases, including stereo sound effects, round erasers, improved "magic" tools, new "Starter" images, improved international character support in the "Text" tool, expanded user documentation, the option to create alternative color palettes, and numerous bug fixes. Developers will also enjoy improved code modularity and portability.
Thanks to its global community of developers, Tux Paint 0.9.16 includes translations into Arabic, Faroese, Gujarati, Scottish Gaelic, Ndebele, Tagalog, Tibetan, Venda, Xhosa and South African English, bringing the total number of supported languages to 69.

Along with source-code, builds for Windows, Mac OS X and Red Hat and Fedora CORE Linux are already available. After over a year of development, a new version of Tux Paint (http://tuxpaint.sf.net/) is now available.

Among the changes too numerous to list here, Tux Paint has received a few new magic tools (smudge, grass, bricks, cartoon, lighten, tint), start-up time and memory usage were reduced, larger screen sizes are now supported, and 10 new translations were created (Albanian, Estonian, Gaelic, Galician, Gronings, Kinyarwanda, Mexican Spanish, Swahili, Thai and Ukranian). Many more stamps have been added, and the stamp collection has been completely reorganized. For more, see the corresponding changelogs. Enjoy!
